Man United dumped out of league cup in 7-goal thriller against Tottenham

In a night of two stories from either goalkeeping duos, Man United were outscored by league rivals, Tottenham Hotspur overnight in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup, with new head coach, Ruben Amorim seeing his side dumped out of a domestic competition for the first time under his management.

Making the winter trip to London – once more without winger, Marcus Rashford amid reports detailing how the academy product will be up for sale in January, United fell behind in the opening 45 minutes – with stand-in goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir spilling a Pedro Porro effort into his own six-yard box for Dominic Solanke to slam home via the post.

Tottenham 4/1 betting underdogs to win cup after Man United win

And avoiding a semi final draw with North London rivals, Arsenal – emerging winners, Tottenham have been drawn against Liverpool, with the former currently boasting underdog 4/1 betting odds for fans interested in sports betting for a triumphant trip to Wembley under boss, Ange Postecoglu.

Taking a 2-nil lead in the immediate goings of the second half, Tottenham scored their second with Dejan Kulusevski finding the net past Bayindir – through a Lisandro Martinez mistake, before Solanke would grab his brace with a well-placed effort inside the area.

And following his cameo of mistakes, it was time for former Celtic and Southampton shot-stopper, Fraser Forster to have his time in an unwanted spotlight.

Misplacing a pass to United captain, Bruno Fernandes in his own six-yard box, the Portuguese midfielder would find substitute, Joshua Zirkzee who converted his first league cup goal from close range.

And just minutes later, taking too much time as he attempted to hoof a long ball forward, Forster would once more make a clanger of an error, with Ivorian winger, Amad Diallo closing him down and deflecting his clearance into the net to reduce the deficit to just one goal.

Poised to level things up, United then saw the game firmly out of sight, with Korean winger, Son Heung-Min firing into the far net direct from a corner – with Turkish keeper, Bayindir once more protesting impeding from the Spurs side, as the ball flew over him into the net.

Attacking late into the final minutes, United would force a late corner of their own, with veteran center half, Johnny Evans scoring his first goal since his return to the club last season – only serving as a consolation as the Old Trafford side exited at the quarter final stage.

Suffering a similar fate to earlier matches in the last 18 months, United were immediately fighting back in the starting moments of the second half, with coach, Amorim claiming his players had “disconnected” at the beginning of the second period as time and time before.

“We disconnect in the beginning of the second half, it was a tough moment for us, like 10 minutes. And then we return, I think we did a great job. I think if you look at the game, I think we were the best team but they [Spurs] were more clinical. We lost the game but the fight from the lads was really important for me.”
