Adidas Unveils Welsh Dragon-Inspired Official Match Ball for the UEFA Champions League Knock Out Stages and Final

– Ball design is inspired by famous national symbol of Wales –

– Ball will be used during the knock-out phases and final in Cardiff –

Herzogenaurach, 13th February – With the UEFA Champions League returning for its crucial final stages, Adidas today unveiled theOfficial Match Ball that will be used as Europe’s best teams compete for the trophy.

Celebrating the nation of Wales, which will host this year’s final, the ball’s unique design features a striking dragon print – inspired by the national emblem, which famously features prominently on the Welsh flag.

The Adidas team, who travelled to Cardiff as part of the design process, drew inspiration from the power and strength the dragon represents in Celtic mythology – with the dragon print designed to represent the ferocity with which the final stages are played.

The ball also delivers the performance benefits required to match the standard of the players set to light up the latter stages of the competition – the likes of Messi, Bale, Suarez and Müller. Its outer coating texture is consistent with all the Adidas UEFA Champions League Official Match Balls and provides optimal grip, while the thermally-bonded star panel design provides a seamless surface for improved first touch.

The Adidas Final Cardiff 2017 ball will be used on field during UEFA Champions League matches from 14th February up until and including the final on 3rd June.

Decision 1

In competition matches, only footballs which meet the minimum technical requirements stipulated in Law 2 are permitted for use.

Such a designation on a football indicates that it has been tested officially and found to be in compliance with specific technical requirements, different for each category and additional to the minimum specifications stipulated in Law 2. The list of the additional requirements specific to each of the respective categories must be approved by the International F.A. Board. The institutes conducting the tests are subject to the approval of FIFA. National association competitions may require the use of balls bearing any one of these three designations.

In all other matches the ball used must satisfy the requirements of Law 2.

Decision 2

In FIFA competition matches and in competition matches organized under the auspices of the confederations and national associations, no kind of commercial advertising on the ball is permitted, except for the emblem of the competition, the competition organizer and the authorized trademark of the manufacturer. Soccer Ball Sizes and Weights

Soccer ball penalty spot

If you want to purchase a soccer ball for yourself, you can just go to the closest sports shop and choose any one that you like. It all depends on which design you’re feeling on that particular day and you’ve got yourself a soccer ball. However, if you’re purchasing one for kids — particularly ones who are not yet in their teenage years — you can’t just give them any regular-sized ball.

The ball needs to be the correct size in order for any player to not only develop, but simply have fun. Nobody wants to kick a ball that is too small or too big. And little you may know, there are a number of different sizes for soccer balls which are meant for certain age groups.

Soccerballworld.com is here to provide you an in-depth guide.

Soccer

Choosing the right size soccer ball

The first step in purchasing a soccer ball is determining the proper size for your age group. Many soccer leagues have different size requirements, so be sure to check with your coach or organization to find out which is the proper size for the age group that the ball will be used with. Even if it isn’t for a soccer league and is just for a kid to play around with, there are certain sizes that are meant for certain age groups.

Soccer balls come in the following official sizes:

  • Size 5 — Ages 12 and above
  • Size 4 — Ages 8 to 12 years
  • Size 3 — Ages 5 to 8 years
  • Size 2 — Ages 3 to 5 years
  • Size 1 — Under 3 years of age

Size 5

  • This is the international standard match ball for all ages 12 and older, including what all the professional players play with.
  • The size 5 ball weighs between 14-16 ounces with a circumference of 27-28 inches.
  • Because of its size, it isn’t ideal for kids below 12 as they may have trouble kicking or controlling the ball.

Size 4

  • Size 4 balls are used for players between the ages of eight and 12.
  • Size 4 balls weigh between 12-13 ounces and have a circumference of 25-26 inches.
  • It is a medium-sized ball which is ideal for youth soccer players who may not have developed enough physically to handle the Size 5 balls as of yet.

Size 3

  • Size 3 balls are smaller balls which are generally used for children aged five to eight.
  • These balls are generally 23-24 inches in circumference and weigh between 11-12 ounces.
  • Size 3 balls are the smallest used in games involving junior players.

Size 2

  • Size 2 balls are one of the smallest balls and are generally used for children aged three to five.
  • These balls are generally 20-22 inches in circumference and weigh between 8-9 ounces.
  • Because of its small size, it is ideal for young kids who are starting to develop skills on their way to becoming competent players.
  • Because of its small size, however, it can also be used by older players who are looking to improve their ball control, first touch and footwork.

Size 1

  • Size 1 balls are the smallest balls available and are generally used for children aged below three.
  • These balls are generally 18-20 inches in circumference and weigh 7 ounces.
  • Although ideal for kids just getting started with the sport, like the size 2 ball, it can also be used by older players looking to improve their ball control, first touch and footwork.

So in conclusion, you cannot just buy any soccer ball you fancy. There are certain sizes that are meant for certain age groups to aid in their growth and development as players. A four-year-old will have trouble kicking a regular size 5 ball and it will ultimately end up being a waste of money.

Not to mention, there are different uses as well. A regular size 5 ball may not be ideal for even professional players who are looking to improve their ball control whereas a smaller size 1 or 2 ball would help with much more benefits.

We hope this guide was helpful and you make the right purchase when you go soccer ball shopping!

Types of Soccer Balls

Soccer Ball 1

There are many types of soccer balls, footballs or Futbols.  Soccer balls can be categorized by the following types:

Professional Match Soccer Balls

  • Developed with top professional clubs to maximize players natural abilities and skills.
  • Approved for use at the highest professional and international levels.
  • Pure performance, exact specifications, great accuracy, speed and control.
  • Designed for all natural and artificial turf surfaces and all climates.

These soccer balls have been developed for top level international professional matches. They usually have some type of organizational approval such as the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) approval logo imprinted on the ball. For information on the ball approvals including ball testing requirements, click here.  At least five layers are used in the construction of the ball and they use the best materials.  For more information on ball materials and construction, go to the Ball Construction Page.

Professional match balls are the most expensive type of ball since they use the best materials and adhere to strict design and testing parameters. Ball trajectory, shape, balance, bounce, water absorption and velocity are all strictly controlled.

Match Soccer Balls

  • High performance range of balls for all playing surfaces.
  • Designed to suit all levels of play and all age groups.
  • Guaranteed to conform to official size, weight, and shape regulations.
  • Materials developed for their performance and reliability

Match balls are designed for use in soccer matches. They cost more than practice balls and less than the internationally approved soccer balls (that makes sense). Some type of association approval  such as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) authentication program, “FIFA Approved” or “FIFA Inspected” is usually imprinted on a match ball. Between four and five lining layers are used in the construction of the ball.

Recreational /Practice/Training /Camp Soccer Balls

  • Tough and highly durable balls for extended use.
  • Specific materials for use on all playing surfaces.
  • Used by coaches for all age groups and all standards

Usually constructed with four or less layers and use a lower quality outer cover such as PVC.  Many practice or camp balls made out of molded material (not stitched together but molded together panels) have been designed to withstand rough surfaces such as concrete or asphalt.

Practice or camp balls are the least expensive balls when compared with match type soccer balls.

Promotional Balls

These balls are usually made to promote a name brand, organization or event.  Some promotional soccer balls are small in size (size one or two) and not intended for practice or match use.

Indoor Soccer Balls

Many indoor soccer balls consist of a felt type outer covering that is similar to the material used on tennis balls. They have the same size configurations as the outdoor soccer balls.

Futsal Soccer Balls

The main difference between a Futsal ball and a typical soccer ball, is that the bladder is filled with foam. That makes the ball heavier and have less bounce for use on the hard playing surface.

The First World Cup Soccer Ball

World cup trophy
Ball 1930 WC

1930 World Cup Soccer Ball of “Tiento”

One of the two soccer balls used in the first 1930 World Cup final between Argentina and Uruguay is shown above. This leather football was used in the final match and taken by an Uruguayan team player. It may have even played a part in the outcome of the first world cup in 1930.  Argentina and Uruguay could  not agree on which ball to use.  So they decided to use an Argentinean ball the first half and a ball supplied by Uruguay the second half.  As it turned out, Argentina was ahead at halftime 2-1.  However; Uruguay came back to win the match in the second half 4-2 using their ball!

Uruguay hosted the first world cup tournament in 1930.

Uruguay 1930 World Cup Team Picture

Uruguay won the first world cup tournament in 1930.  The ball shown in the picture above is in much better shape than the one shown above!

The final between the South American rivals lived up to billing. Each side held the lead for stretches in the first half, but Uruguayan striker Pedro Cea equalized at 2-2, 12 minutes into the second half. Victoriano Santos Iriarte scored the game-winner for Uruguay in the 68th minute, and Hector Castro’s strike in injury time sealed the victory, setting the final score at 4-2 in favor of Uruguay.

Back Row: Left to Right: Bob Millar (Coach), Jimmy Gallagher, Alexander Wood, Jimmy Douglas, George Moorhouse, Ralph Tracy, Andy Auld, Jack Coll (Physician). Front Row: Left to Right: Jim Brown, Billy Gonsalves, Bert Patenaude, Tom Florie, Bart McGhee.

The 1930 World Cup United States soccer team qualified for the semifinals.

The United States team consisted of the same lineup for all three games: goalkeeper Jimmy Douglas of the New York Nationals, right back Alexander Wood of Detroit Holley Carburetor, outside left Bart McGee (NY Nationals), center back Raphael Tracey (St. Louis Ben Millers), left halfback Andy Auld (Providence Gold Bugs), inside left Tom Florie (the captain, New Bedford Whalers), center forward Bert Patenaude (Fall River Marksmen), inside right Billy Gonsalves (Fall River Marksmen), and outside right James Brown (NY Giants). George Moorehouse played both fullback and wing forward.  He played in the original American Soccer League from 1923-1931, mostly for the New York Giants. Jimmy Gallagher played both wing half and wing forward.  He also played for the original American Soccer League, from 1921-1931, for several
different teams.

1930 world cup game

The US stunned Belgium in their opening match, winning 3-0. The first goal was scored by Bart McGhee in the 40th minute off a rebound from the crossbar after a Gonsalves shot. There is some dispute as to whether this was actually the first goal of this first World Cup tournament. FIFA had determined some years later that the first goal was actually scored by Lucien Laurent of France. McGhee followed this with another goal just before halftime when Belgium paused, waiting for an offside whistle, leaving McGhee open in front of the net. Florie got the final goal in the second half. Four days later, the US shut out Paragray 3-0. Their successful run came to a sudden end in the semifinals, when Argentina knocked out the Americans decisively in a 6-1 thrashing. This game was complicated by the US goalkeeper twisting his ankle early in the game, forcing him to play the final 80 minutes practically on one leg, and a serious leg injury suffered by midfielder Tracey, leaving the US with ten men for the second half. The US prevented a shutout with a goal by Brown in the 89th minute. Ultimately, Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2 for the trophy. Despite the disappointing end, this was still a great run for the Americans in their first World Cup, one that would remain unequaled until it’s historic performance in 2002. Group 4 saw the USA produce the best results they would see in a World Cup in the century, as they the won the group after a pair of 3-0 wins over Belgium and Paraguay.

Adidas and Major League Soccer Unveil the 2017 Official Match Ball

-NATIVO’s new design features symbols of the United States and Canada representing unity in North America soccer-

-Design inspiration epitomizes how soccer transcends the field-

-Ball debut on-pitch on March 3rd as 2017 MLS season kicks off-

MLS_2017_NATIVO

Portland, Ore. January 12, 2017 – Adidas and Major League Soccer today launched the newly designed NATIVO, the Official Match Ball for the 2017 MLS season.

The most tested MLS ball to date, the structure of the NATIVO features the same innovative and widely-praised panel shape as the Brazuca – a unique symmetry of six identical panels that are thermally-bonded together to keep out moisture. In addition, the ball offers premium surface structure designed to provide improved grip, touch, stability and aerodynamics.

MLS_2017_NATIVO

“The 2017 MLS Official Match Ball attests to how year after year Adidas Soccer brings the world’s best innovative technology to the field of play,” said Ernesto Bruce, Adidas Sr. Director of Soccer. “The 2017 NATIVO’s blueprint showcases the spirit of Adidas Soccer and Major League Soccer blended through a creative design language that highlights the U.S. and Canadian flags, while also featuring a unique texture that will inspire soccer fans across North America to take their game from the stadium to the street.”

MLS_2017_NATIVO3

The design on the NATIVO combines the symbols of the United States of America and Canada to represent the unity existing within North America soccer. The country flags are then covered by semi-opaque black and grey portions inspired by urban design, a texture inspired by the influence soccer has in popular culture as it transcends from stadium to street and vice-versa. The design also serves as a testament to the MLS supporters’ groups who start their walks to the stadiums and carry that passion into the game.

MOSCOW, November 9, 2017 – Adidas Soccer has today revealed the Official Match Ball for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. The Telstar 18 will be used by the world’s best players as they seek to claim the biggest prize in soccer next summer.

The new Telstar 18 is a reimagining of the first Adidas FIFA World Cup match ball, the Telstar, which was used at the 1970 tournament in Mexico. The name of the original came from its position as the ‘star of television’. The first ball to be decorated with black panels, the pattern was designed to stand out on black and white televisions, and changed soccer design forever.

Telstar 18 Ball_10

The ball has a brand new carcass that retains the best of the Brazuca, the Official Match Ball of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, while building in new technology to maximize performance.

The ball went through extensive testing to ensure it suits the needs of the best players in the world. Some of the leading national and club sides have been involved in the testing process including; Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Manchester United, Juventus, Real Madrid and Ajax. The ball was showcased for the first time by Leo Messi and a host of adidas World Cup winners including Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Alessandro Del Piero, Xabi Alonso, and Lukas Podolsk

A progression from Official Match Balls of the past, a brand new panel design features a metallic print execution and texture graphic effect, engineered to provide performance and durability both in the stadium and on the street. Sustainability has been a key focus of the Telstar 18, with elements including re-cycled backing material and packaging.

The Telstar 18 features an embedded NFC chip – the first time it’s ever been used in an Official Match Ball – making it the most innovative World Cup ball to date. The chip enables consumers to interact with the ball using a Smartphone. Upon interaction, each ball generates a unique identifier, unlocking exclusive content and information for the user.  The personalized and location-aware experience displays specific details of each ball and provides access to challenges which users can enter in the run-up to the World Cup.

ROLAND ROMMLER, Category Director Soccer Hardware, said: “The original Telstar is one of the most iconic soccer balls of all time and one which changed soccer design forever, so developing the Telstar 18 while staying true to the original model was a really exciting challenge for us. The new panel structure and inclusion of an NFC chip has taken soccer innovation and design to a new level and offers both consumers and players a completely new experience. “
