Liverpool Set to Book Place in Champions League Last Eight

The Champions League last-16 first legs have been placed and many teams have already put themselves in a commanding position to wrap up the job and make it through to the quarter finals.

One of those teams is English giant Liverpool, who have won the Champions League as recently as in 2019, when defeating fellow English club Tottenham in the final. Their history with the competition goes back much further than that, and after falling away from Premier League title contention, this is the only other major trophy left for them to aim at.

Liverpool in Control Heading Towards Second Leg

The first leg of this tie was played at a neutral venue due to travel restrictions currently in place, which made things tough on Leipzig. At the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Liverpool came out on top 2-0, to really take a grip of this tie.

The second game will be played at Anfield, and straight from the start of this one, Leipzig have no choice but to attack Liverpool to try and drag themselves back into the tie. In terms of the second game as a standalone game, Liverpool are favourites to win again, and are around evens to do so. Leipzig are around 11/4 to go to Liverpool and win that game, while a draw, which would be enough for Liverpool to qualify is the same price.

With an English club in the game and likely to do well, this is a game that will feature heavily on football betting sites UK fans can access, and no doubt many of those will be backing Liverpool for success.

Should Liverpool qualify for the quarter finals then that enthusiasm around them would move from beating Leipzig to winning the entire competition, repeating their success from 2019. With the team already being out of the Premier League title race, there is a little more pressure on them to succeed in Europe.

Winning this competition is incredibly difficult, but a good showing here and reaching the last four, or better, would help ease the disappointment of falling away so rapidly in the Premier League. Liverpool are a big club all over the world, not just in England, and they are measured on their success. If you look at the latest football news, Liverpool are often a part of that, and spoken about by many.

As it stands right now, the talk is all about Liverpool moving out of the title race and focusing on finishing in the top four, but the Champions League gives them the ability to re-write those headlines and turn them into something a lot more positive.

Having been there and done it in the past is a big help to Liverpool football club, they will feel calm and assured about their chances if they progress. First up is Leipzig, but a win and move into the last eight after that will certainly get Liverpool fans dreaming of success again.
