Man United closing as slight betting favorites to beat Lyon in UEFA Europa League second leg
Amid their dismal run of form, Man United are closing, however, as slight betting favorites to progress to the semi finals of the UEFA Europa League later this week, as they welcome French side, Lyon to Old Trafford for their pivotal second leg.
Returning to Premier League action over the weekend, Ruben Amorim’s side came unstuck domestically again — with Newcastle United routing the side 4-1 at St James’ Park over the course of the weekend.
And seemingly securing a stunning 1-2 win on the road last week, Man United were pegged back late to a 2-2 draw by Ligue 1 club, Lyon.
Man United betting favorites to defeat Lyon this week
But currently, Man United are closing as high as -150 betting favorites to beat the underdog, +375 Lyon in their second leg clash this week — with fans of betting and casino games free to get the best odds over at Bruce Bet casino.
Falling behind early in the second half in their trip to France last week, United were under the kosh via a wayward Thiago Almada free kick, which completedly out-foxed Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana.
But soon thereafter, United pegged Lyon back, with French defender, Leny Yoro returning to his home country to prod a wayward shot past the side’s keeper.
Making a big influence on the pairing late on, Dutch substitute, Joshua Zirkzee looked to have completed a late smash-and-grab for Man United, heading past the keeper to take a late 1-2 lead before stoppage time.
However, late on into the dying embers of the match, Onana once more made a costly error, with Rayan Cherki stabbing the ball into the net after the former Ajax and Internazionale keeper spilled a shot into his own six-yard box.
Dropped for their trip to Tyneside over the weekend, Onana was replaced by young Turkish keeper, Atlay Bayindir, who conceded four goals — one of which came via a costly error of his own.
Set to be without some star players this Thursday night at Old Trafford, Man United saw the above-mentioned scorer, Zirkzee lip off in the second half of the side’s defeat to Newcastle, with faltering striker, Rasmus Hojlund replacing him in a bit-part cameo.
Furthermore, whilst returning to training over the weekend, Ivorian winger, Amad Diallo is expected to miss the return leg at home, as is Dutch center back, Matthijs de Ligt.
But over the weekend, stop-start full back, Luke Shaw returned for a second half appearance for United.
A victory over Lyon would see United progress to the final four of the UEFA Europa League, with some tasty ties awaiting them on that side of the bracket. Notably, a potential reunion with league phase foes, Rangers may come — or Basque side, Athletic Bilbao, who had dumped United out of the same competition during the final years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s mighty tenure at the club.
Interestingly, one of the tournament favorites, Serie A side, Lazio has a massive task on their hands to overcome a 2-0 loss to Bodo/Glimt in their second leg clash this week, with either Tottenham Hotspur, of Bundesliga club, Eintracht Frankfurt awaiting the winner of that clash.
