7 Best Canadian Soccer Players Of All-Time

Canada has a surprising number of talented soccer players.

Whilst the country is far from synonymous with producing World stars, the nation develops
some eye-catching and technically gifted players, many of whom have won prestigious
domestic trophies and European honours.

So who are the best Canadian Soccer players of all-time?

7. Julian De Guzman

Julian De Guzman

Julian De Guzman played 426 times for the likes of Hannover, Deportivo La Coruna and Toronto FC, finding the net 13 times throughout his club career. Whilst applying his trade across a handful of Europe’s biggest leagues, the midfielder failed to secure a major honour at club level.

As one of the best Canadian soccer players of all-time, De Guzman won 89 caps and scored four international goals including a strike versus Jamaica during 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualification. He was named the CONCACAF Gold Cup’s Most Valuable Player in 2007.

6. Randy Samuel

Randy Samuel

Randy Samuel is one of the best Canadian soccer players of all-time. He played most notably for Dutch sides PSV, FC Volendam and Fortuna Sittard. Samuel made 243 club appearances, scoring nine times and winning two Eredivisie titles.

He made his international debut in 1983, playing for his country across a fourteen-year period and earning 82 caps. The defender won the 1985 CONCACAF Gold Cup, North American Nations Cup in 1990 and was awarded the Canadian Soccer’s Service Award in 2001.

5. Dwayne De Rosario

Dwayne De Rosario

One of the best Canadian soccer players of all-time is Dwayne De Rosario, who over the course of 81 caps scored 22 goals and helped his country win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000. He was named in Major League Soccer’s 25 Greatest Players and inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.

De Rosario made 487 club appearances for the likes of San Jose Earthquakes, Houston Dynamo and Canadian side Toronto FC, whilst scoring 152 times in total. He claimed the MLS Cup four times along with a Canadian Championship in both 2009 and 2010.

4. Cyle Larin

Cyle Larin

Cyle Larin featured most notably for Orlando City and Besiktas, appearing 311 times and scoring 112 goals at club level. He won the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup along with a Belgian Super Cup whilst at Club Brugge.

Amongst the best Canadian soccer players of all-time, Larin has made 66 international appearances, scoring a record 29 times for his country and in 2021 hit 14 goals in just 13 caps! He was named 2014’s American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and MLS Rookie of the Year in 2015.

3. Atiba Hutchinson

Atiba Hutchinson

Atiba Hutchinson is one of the best Canadian soccer players of all-time. The midfielder played for teams such as Copenhagen, PSV Eindhoven and Bestikas. He scored 72 times in 743 club appearances, winning a range of Dutch and Turkish domestic honours. Hutchinson was also included in FC Copenhagen’s All Time Best XI.

He made his international debut in 2003, going on to claim a record 105 caps for his country over the course of twenty years. Hutchinson featured for the national side at a total of five CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments and was crowned Canadian Player of the Year six times from 2010 to 2017.

2. Jonathan David

Jonathan David

Amongst the best Canadian soccer players of all-time, classy forward Jonathan David made his international debut in 2018 and has scored 26 goals in 46 appearances to date including seven strikes during 2022 World Cup qualification. In 2019, he won both the CONCACAF Gold Cup Golden Boot and was named Canadian Men’s Player of the Year.

David has played over 260 times for Belgian team Gent and French side Lille whilst scoring over 120 club goals so far. He made an immediate impact in France by helping Lille to the Ligue 1 title during his debut campaign.

Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies has played nearly 300 times for German giants Bayern Munich so far and scored 25 goals. He has been highly successful at the Allianz Arena having won five Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal trophies, the FIFA Club World Cup and 2020’s Champions League.

Davies is amongst the best Canadian soccer players of all-time. He has earned 45 caps to date for his country, the left-back scoring 15 times in a more advanced and wider midfield position than he plays at Bayern. He was named CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year twice, Canadian Men’s Player of the Year on four occasions and also included in UEFA’s Team of the Year for 2020.
