The top four favourites to be relegated from the Premier League

The Premier League season is upon us. Whilst Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and the other big dogs fight for the golden prize, others simply just want to remain in the division.

New boys Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City want to do just that. They won’t be alone, with the likes of Sunderland looking to avoid second-season syndrome.

Hull City – ¼

The play-off final winners are the favourites to go down from the Premier League this season. The surprise package of last season has been doing what they can in the transfer market but still lack real experience in England’s top division.

No one can hide that Hull are a long shot to stay up, and the odds represent just that.

Last season’s Championship runners-up are the second favourite to be relegated this year.

Ipswich Town played a blinder of a second-half last campaign, but losing Kieran McKenna has left them a little bit lost. Gary O’Neil has taken over, looking to build on the legacy McKenna had, but the road is uphill.

Much of the Tractor Boys team is the same as the last time they were in the Premier League, and they have added experience like Issa Diop and Sasa Lukic.

Staying up is incredibly hard, but if O’Neil can make this Ipswich team hard to beat, the experience is there.

Coventry City – 4/6

The Championship winners sit on the same odds as Ipswich Town to be relegated from the Premier League this season.

Frank Lampard’s team have been a topflight team in waiting but not a lot of this squad has played within it. Lampard knows how to keep a team up but has never done it with a newly promoted side.

The Sky Blues have brought back Carl Rushworth and Gus Hamer, too huge signings but it will be up to Elis Simms, Haji Wright and Jack Rudoni if Coventry really want to stay up.

Lampard’s team should have the best chance of the newly promoted sides, but it will be a long old season.

Sunderland – 7/2

Sunderland has a lot to contend with this season, and avoiding the dreaded second season syndrome will be harder than ever.

Regis Le Bris’s side had a dream first year back in the Premier League, qualifying for Europe. The problem is, Europe means more games, and with the way the Black Cats finished the season, it could spell trouble.

Sunderland represents the most likely, current topflight side to hit the drop. The squad needs work with more games, and if they finish as they did last year, it could be a fight for this team
