Man United weigh up transfer for Ollie Watkins as betting odds receive massive slash

Amid their failed search for a new goalscoring forward so far this summer, Man United have seen odds slashed on a deal to sign Aston Villa striker, Ollie Watkins – in a rather shock move for the England international.

United, who missed out on another England international, Liam Delap this summer, saw the Ipswich Town striker trade Portman Road for Stamford Bridge, linking up with former coach, Enzo Maresca at Chelsea.

And furthermore, the Old Trafford side are expected to to end their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon striker, Viktor Gyokeres – with the Swedish striker set to hunt a club who will compete in the UEFA Champions League at the beginning of next season.

So, with options limited – United have seen odds a move for Ollie Watkins slashed as low as 9/2, sat behind just 6/4 betting favorites, Arsenal in their bid to sign the England international. Emerging as Aston Villa’s first-choice striker since his move from Brentford five years ago, in the time since, Watkins, 29, has scored an impressive 75 goals for the Midlands club.

And landing his role up top in Unai Emery’s system following the lucrative departure of Jhon Duran – in his faltering move to the Middle East, Watkins has scored more 15 goals in all competitions for Villa in his five seasons with the club.

Last season to boot, competing in the European Cup, Watkins scored just once in 12 appearances in the competition, but in all competitions, scored an impressive 17 goals.

Securing his country’s side in the UEFA Euro 2024 final against Spain last year, Watkins dispatched late past Holland, to land a 2-1 victory in Germany.

And given his pedigree up top in the Premier League – compared to that of the faltering Rasmus Hojlund – though a leftfield option, it would be wise for United’s board to weigh up a deal to sign the Torquay-born striker.

Other options on the radar of the Ineos-backed outfit are reportedly, Victor Osimhem, as well as Lille striker, Jonathan David.

Both unlikely arrivals at Old Trafford this season, while available at a cut price from Italian side, Napoli, Osimhen is set to command a sizeable wage packet to make good on his long-mooted move to English football.

And on the front of Canadian striker, David, while available on a free this summer with his contract set to expire, he is set to require a massive signing-on fee – in the tens of millions according to reports – as is his representative.

News of a move for Crystal Palace striker, Jean-Philipe Mateta have also gone cold in recent weeks at United, with the Sevran-born striker set to guide his side into European competition next season following their FA Cup win over Manchester City.

Completing a potential £62.5 million move for Wolves forward, Matheus Cunha, earlier this month, United are also locked in talks with Brentford ahead of a move for Cameroonian right-sided forward, Bryan Mbuemo.

Welcoming a summer move to Ruben Amorim’s side, Mbeumo has recently drawn links with a move to Tottenham Hotspur to boot, with former manager, Thomas Frank now taking the hot seat as he replaces outgoing manager, Ange Postecoglou.
