American Soccer has been responsible for producing a number of talented goalscorers.
Many of the United States’ greatest have gone on to win honors domestically with some even making roads on the European stage and excelling at the international level.
So who are the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time?
7. Joe-Max Moore
Joe-Max Moore is one of the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time. He featured for the likes of FC Nürnberg, New England Revolution, and Everton. Moore made 213 senior appearances, scoring 82 goals with his most successful period coming at New England in the late 90’s where he netted 52 times.

6. Brian McBride
Brian McBride featured 450 times for teams such as Columbus Crew, Premier League side Fulham, and Chicago Fire, having scored 114 club goals. He claimed the 2002 U.S. Open Cup and was also named Fulham’s Player of the Year on two occasions.
As one of the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time, McBride won 95 caps for his country and hit 30 goals in total. He helped the national side win a CONCACAF Gold Cup whilst being named as an MLS All-Star five times and inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame of 2014.
5. Christian Pulisic
Amongst the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time, Christian Pulisic debuted internationally in 2016 and has struck 29 times across 68 appearances. He won the CONCACAF Nations League on three occasions and was crowned U.S. Soccer’s Male Player of the Year four times.
Pulisic has made over 300 appearances for the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and AC Milan having found the net 60 times. He has won a German DFB-Pokal along with the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup whilst at Stamford Bridge.
4. Eric Wynalda
Eric Wynalda featured for the likes of FC Saarbrücken, VfL Bochum, and MLS side San Jose Clash. He scored 77 goals for the American League side in 251 appearances, was named as an MLS All-Star in 1996 and was awarded MLS Goal of the Year during the same year.
Amongst the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time, Wynalda made 106 international appearances whilst hitting 34 goals for his country including a strike versus Switzerland at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He also helped his national team win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1991.
3. Jozy Altidore
Jozy Altidore is one of the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time. He featured for such teams as AZ and MLS club Toronto FC, having won the Dutch KNVB Cup alongside the 2017 MLS Cup and three Canadian Championships in a row.
In 2007, Altidore made his full international debut, scoring 42 goals across 115 international matches for the Americans and was even named as U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year on two separate occasions.
2. Landon Donovan
One of the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time is Landon Donovan. He featured for the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, and LA Galaxy as well as loan spells at both Bayern Munich and Premier League side Everton. Donovan played more than 500 club matches, registering 200 goals whilst winning a total of six MLS Cups whilst at San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy.
Having claimed 157 caps for the national team, he scored 57 times and still remains the U.S. joint-highest ever scorer. He was crowned U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year on four occasions, acclaimed as the MLS’ Greatest Player of All-Time, and inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame of 2023.
1. Clint Dempsey
Clint Dempsey played for the likes of Fulham, Tottenham and MLS club Seattle Sounders across 475 club appearances having struck a total of 155 times. He went on to win the MLS Cup, and U.S. Open Cup as well as being awarded Fulham Player of the Season on two occasions and as the Premier League side’s top scorer twice.
Dempsey is thought of as one of the best U.S. soccer goalscorers of all time. He claimed 141 caps for his country and struck 57 times which makes him the United States joint-top scorer of all time. He won the CONCACAF Gold Cup on three occasions, was named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year three times, and was welcomed into the National Soccer Hall of Fame during 2022.
