Just moments later with less than a half hour elapsed in the first half, Man United once more conceded from a cross, with Newcastle wideman, Anthony Gordon finding Brazilian midfielder, Joelinton in the six-yard box, who once more headed home past Cameroonian stopper, Onana.
Completely overran in midfield – which consisted of the ageing, Christian Eriksen and former Real Madrid anchor, Casemiro, coach Ruben Amorim made a controversial substitution, hooking Dutch forward, Joshua Zirkzee off after half an hour in place of academy number six, Kobbie Mainoo.
Storming down the tunnel sporting his jacket, former Bologna forward, Zirkzee soon returned to United’s bench – with the Old Trafford faithful cheering his withdrawal following his slow start to life in English football.
Sharing his thoughts during commentary duty on Zirkzee’s departure from the pitch after just half an hour of football, former Man United full back, Gary Neville described his past side as the “worst” team – pound-for-pound in English football right now.
“It’s absolutely brutal,” Gary Neville explained. “I haven’t seen that too many times in the 43 years I’ve been coming to Old Trafford. He’s going straight down the tunnel and I actually don’t blame him because sometimes it’s a massive embarrassment. He’s not played well, let’s be clear. You’re watching the worst pound for pound football team in the country, bar none.”
And himself commenting on his decision to withdraw Zirkzee in place of midfield youngster, Mainoo, Portuguese head coach, Amorim claimed he was attempting to alter the flow of the match and restore some parity.
“If I think that I could do something to change the result, I do,” Ruben Amorim said. “Like I said it was more the belief from the players, less my job of changing something. In this moment we don’t have training and we don’t have the base. When you’re in the difficult moment, you need that base. They were better than us, plain and simple.”
This weekend, United travel to Merseyside to take on league leaders, Liverpool – before returning to FA Cup action in a defense of the domestic cup in a fierce pairing with a third round clash against Arsenal in another trip to North London.
