Man United emerge as betting favorite to sign Ben Chilwell in January as left back search heats up
Off the back of a disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Nottingham Forest over the weekend, Man United have emerged as rather surprising betting favorites to sign English full back, Ben Chilwell from Chelsea – with the club searching for a left back option for the remainder of the season.
Suffering their second loss in the space of a week, United were downed midway through last week away to Arsenal, with both Jurrien Timber and William Saliba converting from two set-piece routines.

And with the right-footed Diogo Dalot filling in at left-back with fitness issues causing concern for both Tyrell Malacia and veteran defender, Luke Shaw, United have emerged as low as 3/1 betting favorites to sign Ben Chilwell in the January transfer window – with fans able to avail of a Bet365 bonus code for a host of football specials and other sports.
Yet to feature this season for the London side in the Premier League, Chilwell, a UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea, has been dislodged from the starting eleven in recent seasons, through both form and injury setbacks, and has been linked with a further move abroad to Italy to join Serie A giants Juventus under head coach, Thiago Motta.
With a look to a more permanent option in the summer transfer window, United have also emerged as a potential suitor for Canadian wing-back, Alphonso Davis – who currently plys his trade with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, with his contract lapsing in the summer.
However, while United are linked with a move for the explosive defender, Spanish side, Real Madrid is currently considered the leader in the lengthy race to sign the Canada National Team star.
Expected to miss out on a return to action in their UEFA Europa League return during the week against Viktoria Plzen in Czech Republic, the above-mentioned, Shaw has been displaced in the side by both the deputising, Malacia, as well as natural right back, Dalot over the last year.
And while United face a pivotal trip abroad midweek to take on Plzen, they will also have a firm eye on a Sunday return to league action against Man City in the Manchester Derby.
Discussing his rather faltering start to his tenure with United, Portuguese head coach, Ruben Amorim claimed that during his initial stint with Sporting Lisbon – he also suffered from a rather similar start.
“I had this and worse in Sporting in the beginning,” Ruben Amorim said following United’s loss to Nottingham Forest. “I know the feeling for me is the same. For the world it’s completely different because you know Sporting is in Portugal, but in Manchester you have a lot of attention, but for me it’s the same. The same feeling.
If you are a little bit experienced in football, this happens with a lot of clubs. And we have to manage to continue to do the same things and improving the team because this will turn around. So we need time and we need to continue to work in the same way every day.”
