Man United hold Liverpool to 2-2 draw in stellar performance against bitter rivals at Anfield
Turning in arguably their best performance under the reign of new head coach, Ruben Amorim, Man United almost upset the apple cart majorly on the road at Anfield over the weekend, taking a point home to Old Trafford in a stunning 2-2 back-and-forth with league leaders, Liverpool.
Expected to await another familiar drubbing against the streaking Arne Slot side, United’s first hurdle was actually whether or not their match against the league leaders would go ahead, following snowy and wintery blizzards overnight in Merseyside.
Man United betting underdogs to beat Arsenal in FA Cup
And beginning the matchup with a spark of life – United will need to do similar this weekend in their FA Cup clash with another rival, Arsenal – with fans and bettors alike able to find the best odds on the crunch matchup over at https://www.sportscasting.com/betting-sites/offshore-sportsbooks/
Going into the first-half interval drawing nil-all following a pair of decent chances squandered by both Amad Diallo and Danish forward, Rasmus Hojlund, who forced a near-post save from Allison, Man United were sure to take some positives into the second period.
However, turning in a shock lead just minutes into the half, Argentine defender, Lisandro Martinez would thrash an effort high into the roof of the net beyond the Brazilian shot-stopper, having been played in by returning captain, Bruno Fernandes.
However, just six minutes later, United were pegged back, with Dutch forward, Cody Gakpo getting free with some good footwork, and firing beyond Andre Onana.
And hit with another sting, a later VAR (Video Assistant Referee) awarded Liverpool a penalty kick, with Dutch defender, Matthijs de Ligt handling the ball in his own area.
Converting from the spot for his staggering sixteenth goal against United, Liverpool took the lead for the first time in the evening.
However, with just ten minutes remaining, Man United managed to equalize, with substitute, Alejandro Garnacho finding the previously mentioned Amad in the six-yard box, who peeled away from marker, Andy Robertson, and slid past Allison to draw things level again.
And almost forcing a stunning third which would wrap up all points and take home a monstrous win over Liverpool on the road, Man United were sent through with Joshua Zirkzee finding Harry Maguire at close range, who could only skew his shot high and over the bar with the goal gaping.
Taking an impressive point on the road, Man United’s head coach, Amorim claimed he had witnessed an entirely different team in his own side following a recent string of disappointing defeats to the trio of Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Newcastle.
“Today we were a different team not because of the system and not because of a technical aspect of the game. We faced the competition in the way we are supposed to face every day. Training and match, it doesn’t matter, we need to face every day like that.”
“It’s really clear. We lost three games in a row at home, some of the games we suffer two goals without doing nothing. I am upset today, really upset.
“I am pleased for the performance but everyone today is going to say to that team that they did a good job. Today I am allowed to be the only guy upset with the team but today we were a team.”
