Xabi Alonso opens as betting favorite to replace Pep Guardiola as next Man City manager

Following a dismal run of form which has seen the defending Premier League champions, Man City drop their last four matches straight in all competitions, Spanish head coach, Xabi Alonso has emerged as a betting favorite to replace potential outgoing manager, Pep Guardiola as the next permanent boss at the Etihad.

Alonso, who guided Bundesliga outfit, Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever domestic championship win last season, received massive links to a return to his former side, Liverpool, over the course of the summer, before Dutch head coach, Arne Slot made the move from Feyenoord.

And remaining in the German side’s dugout this season, Alonso has since received another credible link to a move to Real Madrid – another former club of his, to replace veteran Italian head coach, Carlo Ancelotti.

Set to return to Premier League action this weekend in a home return against Tottenham Hotspur, Man City currently find themselves a worrying five points off the top of the table behind Liverpool.

Losing four games in a row, Man City were dumped out of the league cup by Tottenham, before Ruben Amorim – who takes the reigns at Man United this weekend, masterminded a magnificent 4-1 UEFA Champions League win, in between of league defeats to both Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion.

And reflecting on his side’s surprising losing skid as of late before Christmas, Guardiola – a former coach at both FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, claimed that despite the perception, Man City are far from a “special” side.

“I was a football player and many times I lost a lot of games – four in a row, five in a row, six in a row,” Pep Guardiola said. “I never expect different, the fact we won in the past, that we are special. People can believe that but it’s not true.”

“You can lose four games in different competitions,” Guardiola explained. “Again if you ask me every single game that we lost, I will give you my opinion. I know after you win, everything is perfect. Against Fulham, we won and we played miles worse than today Sporting Lisbon and Spurs. Miles away.”

“But we are not consistent enough to maintain this level that helped us to win what we want for many years. Hopefully, in the future we’ll come back, and if we don’t come back we’ll learn from that.”

Kicking on this season in pursuit of a stunning Bundesliga retention, the above-mentioned Leverkusen side – under the guidance of Alonso, has so far struggled for early-season form, sitting fourth in the league behind Eintracht Frankfurt, and RB Leipzig, while Bayern find themselves top by nine points ahead of the most recent title winners.

As well as Bundesliga spoils last season, Alonso led Leverkusen to a DFB-Pokal victory – and earned a UEFA Europa League runners-up medal in a final loss to Italian side, Atalanta.
